A High-resolution Radio Survey of the Vela Supernova Remnant

چکیده
This paper presents a high-resolution radio continuum (843 MHz) survey of the Vela supernova remnant. The contrast between the structures in the central pulsar-powered nebula of the remnant and the synchrotron radiation shell allows the remnant to be identified morphologically as a member of the composite class. The data are the first of a composite remnant at spatial scales comparable with those available for the Cygnus Loop and the Crab Nebula, and make possible a comparison of radio, optical and soft X-ray emission from the resolved shell filaments. The survey, made with the Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Telescope, covers an area of 50 square degrees at a resolution of 43 ′′ × 60 ′′ , while imaging structures on scales up to 30 ′ .

Bullets in a Core Collapse Supernova Remnant: the Vela Remnant
We use two-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations to investigate the properties of dense ejecta clumps (bullets) in a core collapse supernova remnant, motivated by the observation of protrusions probably caused by clumps in the Vela supernova remnant. The ejecta, with an inner flat and an outer steep power law density distribution, were assumed to freely expand into an ambient medium with a con...
متن کاملThe Rayleigh-Taylor instability and the origin of filamentary structures in the Vela supernova remnant
The nature of the Vela X-ray ”jet”, recently discovered by Markwardt & Ögelman (1995), is examined. It is suggested that the ”jet” arises along the interface of domelike deformations of the Rayleigh-Taylor unstable shell of the Vela supernova remnant; thereby the ”jet” is interpreted as a part of the general shell of the remnant. The origin of deformations as well as the general structure of th...
متن کاملRevealing New Physical Structures in the Supernova Remnant N63A through Chandra Imaging Spectroscopy
We present Chandra X-ray observations of the supernova remnant (SNR) N63A in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). N63A, one of the brightest LMC remnants, is embedded in an H ii region and probably associated with an OB association. The optical remnant consists of three lobes of emission contained within the approximately three times larger X-ray remnant. Our Chandra data reveal a number of new ph...
متن کاملDiscovery of a New Pulsar Wind Nebula in the Large Magellanic Cloud
We present new high-resolution radio and X-ray observations of the supernova remnant (SNR) B0453–685 in the Large Magellanic Cloud, carried out with the Australia Telescope Compact Array and the Chandra X-ray Observatory respectively. Embedded in the SNR shell is a compact central nebula producing both flat-spectrum polarized radio emission and non-thermal X-rays; we identify this source as a p...
متن کاملRe-identification of G35·6−0·4 as a supernova remnant
G35·6−0·4 is an extended radio source in the Galactic plane which has previously been identified as either a supernova remnant or an HII region. Observations from the VLA Galactic Plane Survey at 1.4 GHz with a resolution of 1 arcmin allow the extent of G35·6−0·4 to be defined for the first time. Comparison with other radio survey observations show that this source has a non-thermal spectral in...
